Blind Spot.

Book by Clifton (2022).  Brackets {} indicate Kindle location references.
For Harv, this story is about the birth of the Gallup World Poll as a global study on wellbeing every year {4023}: in a press conference on November 8, 2001 {3982} -- Rumsfeld’s answer ... inspired Gallup to measure the will of the world: "It seems to me that it’s very difficult for you or me … to go down and do a Gallup poll and try to net out the answer … And I am not inclined to chase that rabbit." That day, the Gallup World Poll was born {3983}.
After the Afghanistan era the Gallup conclusion differed from the government's. The most intriguing
finding had to do with how people in predominantly Muslim countries felt about the United States. Officials in the U.S. government had a popular phrase about why terrorists hated America: 'They hate us for our freedoms.' But was it true? {3998}
Muslim countries Gallup surveyed not only didn't hate America for its freedoms; freedom was one of the things they admired most about the West. The only thing they admired more was the West's technology. The main reasons people in these countries gave for why they resented the West had little to do with freedom . Instead, they cited a breakdown in social morals, negative attitudes toward Muslims, corruption, and unfair attitudes about the Palestinian Territories. {4002}
Blind Spot turns the GallupWorld methodology to the topic happiness synonymous with wellbeing {91} and argues for more use of Gallup World conclusions together with GDP when portraying country wellbeing. As one begins to see GDP in terms of personal wellbeing, the closer the opinion makers are to voter sentiment. Are the voters/citizens happier as time brings changes? Economic GDP growth is distinct from personal financial growth. A growing economy may not benefit everyone. Additionally, money's impact on an individual is often examined through their income and not their overall financial situation, including their debt. {1648}
Over all the world, according to Gallup, people feel more anger, sadness, pain, worry, and stress than ever before. {76} While experts seem to count almost everything, they don't systematically measure how people feel. {89}
There is a growing divide between the haves and have-nots of a great life . This is called wellbeing inequality. {100} A term that is different than what leaders understand as income inequality. {99}
The five elements {136} of inherently {1260} subjective wellbeing ("happiness") {138} are
  • fulfilled by their work,
  • have little financial stress,
  • live in great communities,
  • have good physical health, and have
  • loved ones they can turn to for help. {126}
Stated another way {1297} the five aspects all people have in common
  • their work,
  • finances,
  • physical health,
  • communities, and
  • relationships with family and friends.
Only 300 million in the world have a great job {162}.     Thriving at work even enhances how much joy , laughter , respect, and intellectual stimulation you experience. Having your emotional needs met at work changes everything. For instance, when we surveyed German working adults , 81 % of engaged ( thriving ) workers reported having fun at work in the past week, compared with only 10 % of actively disengaged ( miserable) workers. {1516} The official unemployment rate fails workers for two reasons : It doesn't capture real global unemployment, and it doesn't capture the misery in the workplace . The solution ? Change the metric used for the health of the jobs market. Instead of working to lower the 5.4 % global unemployment rate, world leaders should work on increasing the global great jobs rate, which today stands at 9 %. {1290}    Over 1 billion people are so dissatisfied with their community that they want to leave it forever. {165} Thriving communities are built on trust and people who help each other. {167} Having high physical wellbeing includes being active and eating right. {169} Don't be fussy about your food, and never, never overeat. Don't worry . Work at a job you love, {1289} part of what leads to a long life, but findings also point to what makes a great life. {1295}    A 2021 study by the Pew Research Center spanning 17 countries found that the top answers people gave when asked what makes life meaningful were : family and children, occupation and career, material wellbeing (wealth), friends and community, and physical and mental health {1342}     This book is a primer text on the use of the Gallup World Report yearly product by world leaders and acceptance by the populace whether focused on a specific topic or general comparisons.
